Plate G8.no9: Watchtower Windows: The Great Wall of China*
The size of the watchtowers on the Great Wall of China varied – often the larger ones tended to be in a worse state of repair than the smaller ones. Such was the case here. Nevertheless, one could still get a sense of the scale and intentions of the original construction.
Being so ruined, it felt more like a scenography than an actual building, which was interesting in its own right. The panorama hopefully conveys that aspect of the space as it now exists. I’d hoped to capture more people – but they kept stepping out of the picture (respectfully I might add!) Still, a few remain, and I think give the impression, of a stage set designed for multiple soliloquies…
