Plate G4.no20: The Glasgow Herald Building by C.R. Mackintosh (Glasgow)
I spent much of my life engaged to this building. The term is accurate – for in some strange way, for years we were in a relationship.
It was the focus for my final year architectural thesis – at the time it was abandoned and deemed appropriately expectant of some proposed re-use. I also completed measured drawings of the building (Images i and ii [Gallery 3: ILLLUSTRATIONS) – for none existed. I know this building, therefore, every inch of it; I studied its past, I literally crawled over it……
But, we parted, inevitably…
Now though, looking back, I so treasure the time we had. Now it’s not the same – it’s been saved; but when I knew it, it was unloved, and I ended its loneliness – for I loved it… and I still do…
