Plate G1.no10: The ‘Ghost Lab’, Halifax, Nova Scotia (Canada) by MacKay Lyons Sweetapple Architects

In 2004, ludicrously, I accepted the role as International Exchange Co-ordinator in the Department of Architecture (University of Strathclyde). I’m rubbish at languages, doubt the rationale for cities, and (I was): terrified of flying. Nevertheless, I determined to expand the already extensive exchange programme, especially to seek out more exchange opportunities beyond the European domain.
I knew of and admired MacKay-Lyons Sweetapple Architects – as refined authors of an architecture, modern, yet pointedly sensitive to locale and re-interpreting traditional use of materials. It was however their ambitious ‘Ghost Lab’ project, which was linked to the University of Dalhousie curriculum that prompted my visit to Nova Scotia to secure an exchange relationship. The project remains unparalleled, mirroring my own belief in ‘live build’ as invaluable teaching methodology in architectural education.
