Plate G7.no3: Stairway to Heaven: Kinnaird Head Castle Lighthouse, Fraserburgh (Scotland)

Technically, I’m not sure this picture constitutes a picture of a ruin. The Kinnaird Lighthouse still functions – though it is a museum now, rather than a working lighthouse.
Still – I’ll advocate ruin – because the lighthouse was built inside the ruins of a castle.
I’ve seen more recent examples of parasitic architecture, some rather dynamic it must be said – but I’ve never seen one as bold as this. Or perhaps as cautious. I understand that it was an early, if not a first attempt at a lighthouse (by the subsequently lauded lighthouse designer Robert Stevenson, grandfather of the author RL Stevenson).
This was a first for me too – first time getting to climb to the top and stand inside the lighthouse lamp. Simply wondrous……
