Plate G5.no8: Solitary Tree II -Hadrian’s Wall (Cumbria)

After my son died, I wrote a story entitled: ‘The Solitary Silver Birchtree’. Where he is buried, a single birchtree stands sentinel over him – the inspiration, therefore, obvious.
But every time I see a tree grow, alone, I think about this story and am prompted to wonder about all those unseen connections in life. The premise in my story, was that the tree was abandoned, and I suppose instinctively I think that trees desire to be in a community with each other. They do not choose to grow alone.
But maybe some do……maybe some, just wish to be apart.
Either way, they are solitary, and solitary can mean lonely – this picture reminds me that despite distance, others are around, always.
