Plate G5.no6: Solitary tree – Hadrian’s Wall (Cumbria)
I have no idea what caught my eye here. There are moments on the Hadrians Wall trail any wall is notably absent, and one finds oneself wandering, almost aimlessly, over tragically familiar terrain: of tarmac roads, or dormant fields, or stagnant suburbs. This was one of those moments – and I recall taking several pictures here, of signposts and fences and lines disappearing into the horizon. I didn’t notice the tree to be honest, so focused was I on the mundane.
It was only later, whilst manipulating the picture that the tree impressed.
I think about this picture often – it’s been described to me as a lonely picture, and I did feel alone when it was taken, but I see it as a reminder, that gifts lie in the familiar.
