Plate G9.no2: Mount Yamnuska – Canmore – Canadian Rockies*
This was taken on the first day of the trek – typically a ‘warm-up’ day, to get the limbs loosened up. Indeed they were, but as were too, the eyes. This photograph is just an indication of what was to come: a scenery of remarkable characteristics, expansive, dramatic, stunning – overwhelming, and at times, imposing and a little bit scary. I’d find myself saying ‘beautiful’ a lot and feeling the lameness of the utterance. I’d also find myself being lost for words, on occasions when that apparently gorgeous landscape would reveal itself to be more than simply beautiful – that it demanded respect, and rightly so. It had been there considerably longer than I…nor even those who’d named it…
