This is the second of three pictures of Mitchell Lane. Just making the point, that Glasgow has more than one architectural local hero. There is Mackintosh of course, and rightly so …but there is also Alexander ‘Greek’ Thomson, and, as evidenced here: Gillespie Kidd and Coia Architects, specifically Andy McMillan and Izi Metzstein.
I was taught by Andy and Izi, little realising at the time just how lucky I was. They were two giants of the modern age, who practiced an architecture which at the time was not particularly fashionable: regionalism.
In simple terms, what they taught me was that context mattered – so transparently evident in this building on the right: the BOAC Building. To understand, one just has to take a minute to look…
