PHOTOGRAPHY POINTS Blog (Extra IV): Dunrobin Castl PHOTOGRAPHY POINTS Blog (Extra IV): Dunrobin Castle (Scotland) Reflections: Another picture that I’ve not included in my online galleries, but rather like nonetheless – and sharing furthermore in relation to Scotland’s Home of the Year (Episode 5 of Series 3 airing tonight at 8.00pm on BBC Scotland [ #scotlandshomeoftheyear ]). I came across Dunrobin Castle by accident. I’m sure as anyone might agree, my initial reaction was: I’ve left Scotland, and been transported to the continent somewhere in France, at some earlier time than this. This is the view from the rear; the front is a cacophony of architectural elements, vying for attention, and decidedly more Scottish Baronial than this façade, which is in my opinion infinitely more considered in its composition, more restrained but much less ‘Scottish’. Which prompts the wondering: about style, and place making, and appropriateness. Its easy to get architecturally critical – as the previous sentences confirm. But if it’s one’s own home, what difference does it make – and presumably the Earl of Sutherland was content with the design, so that critique, should it apply? Of course, I am an architect, so I can’t help it; but universally, what do we do here? If the owner is content, that presumably could be considered the end of the argument. But that’s where I’d digress and argue no: everyone should be infinitely more knowledgeable about architecture. It clothes everyone in the world, and for their whole life, and how can it possibly be so that there is such little common knowledge about this (literally) all-consuming subject. PHOTOGRAPHY POINTS Blog 17: Reservoir with Concret PHOTOGRAPHY POINTS Blog 17: Reservoir with Concrete near Glen Fruin (Scotland) Introduction: This photograph is plate no: G2.no8 from my Photography Gallery 2: LANDSCAPES. (https://www.michaelangus-author.com/photography/) Reflections: Between 2016-2018 I undertook six charity treks in support of Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity. I trained on the whole pretty diligently for these treks, I kept records and often set myself specific objectives. As such I would tend to follow established definable routes. On this day however, I went awol. I struck out across undulating fields, somewhere just above Garelochhead (West coast of Scotland). There was no path to follow. I did have a rough idea where I was……but, nevertheless, I got lost; and whilst lost I came across this rather surreal body of water. I love this picture. I suppose because it is so surreal – it’s hardly of its place; and then there’s the concrete, apparently floating… It felt like a reward, for taking the path less, or indeed, never travelled…… Technical: Taken on iPhone 6. PHOTOGRAPHY POINTS Blog 16: The Chapel: St Peter’s Seminary (Cardross [Scotland]) Introduction: This photograph is plate no: G7.no6 from my Photography Gallery 7: RUINS. (https://www.michaelangus-author.com/photography/) Reflections: I was taught at the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow - in the era of Andy MacMillan and Isi Metzstein, two architectural giants who brought their immense status to bear, in establishing the school as a powerhouse of architectural pedagogy. I attended lectures by both of them, the most memorable lectures out of an innumerable number. Isi I remember gave one about St. Peter’s. Famous for his quick wit, he began the lecture with: ‘If I may point out, to clarify: we were influenced by Le Corbusier, and not the other way round….’ This image contains more oblique Corbusier references, than other moments in this building, infinitely more identifiable. Suffice to say, my life has been enriched beyond measure by all three. Technical: Taken on iPhone 6. ARCHITECTURE MEMORIES Blog 8(b) SKETCH SECTION : T ARCHITECTURE MEMORIES Blog 8(b) SKETCH SECTION : Talking + Listening Booth Reflections: Whilst on the topic of sketching and scale…… Certain issues continually arise when teaching architecture. Context for example, or the indication of. The problem is relevance. Why would one consider it so necessary to include something if one does not see the relevance? Badgering doesn’t encourage relevance. The task has to make the context relevant, and thereby implicit that it be shown. Same with programme, viz a viz the use – who the architecture is for, and to accommodate the activity. I find that the easiest way to do that is draw the individual in the act, and then simply draw the building around…. literally, as is the case here. Scale is then assured….. And the section then becomes the key drawing; the individual is upright on the drawing and most representative of the actuality, unlike the individual on plan, which is much more abstract. This specific image was drawing whilst tutoring Year 4. The context was Govan, the task: to design a civic facility for the local community (and potentially the city). Research would continually highlight the issue of cultural division, with associated language barriers and ‘failure to communicate…’. Hence: The Talking + Listening Booth. I’ve got other drawings about this, which are currently inaccessible due to lockdown – but once freedom returns Ill share, if only to further this idea, of design process being drawn out, form the act of the individual to whole building. It’s one way of doing it…..
