Of all the treks I undertook, the landscape of this one was by far, the most arid, and dryly hued. Rock surfaces predominated.
One would think therefore that such a tough landscape would be stolidly unforgiving, and indeed in many ways it was – but curiously, there was a softness to it as well. The process by which these rocks had been formed invited an understanding that though their surfaces were hard, they were once fluid – and that fluidity lingered still within, despite outward appearances.
It may seem strange to cite this feeling as true – but at times the interpretation was unquestionable; occasions like this, when the landscape revealed seductively its gentler side…
