Plate G1.no18: The Curvilinear Range Glasshouse (1848) National Botanic Gardens Dublin (Ireland)
Sometimes, one takes a picture without the slightest conception of how it will turn out. Taken, almost distractedly, as if between takes rehearsing for the next. Such is the case with this photograph. I can remember taking the picture – but I had no idea then, that it would become a favourite……
One factor in the causation of its original dismissal might have been due to the subject matter. I have fondness for such buildings (who doesn’t? – they are unquestionably exquisite) but I knew not this particular example. I suppose I was being partisan, to my preferred glasshouse: The Kibble Palace in the Botanic Gardens (Glasgow).
This glasshouse though, is equally as delightful – and on reflection, I discovered an additional delight: the accord the landscape gives to the building’s symmetry.
