Plate G3.no2: Christ the Redeemer Statue – Rio de Janeiro (Brazil)
I remember, as a child, watching Hitchcock’s ‘Notorious’. The protagonists Gary Grant and Ingrid Bergman fly into Rio de Janeiro over the Christ the Redeemer statue. Rio is laid out below, exotic and unworldly; distant, literally and cognitively, ultimately too far away altogether. I never thought I’d ever get to see such a place……
And then, there I was, standing beneath that self-same statue……
It was covered in mist; invisible, in fact. The place was packed, the sense of disappointment palpable. But I was neither bitter nor bothered – I was in Rio!
Yet – somehow, by actually being in Rio, those romantic notions conjured in my youth had diminished…… but then the mist, momentarily evaporated. Audible gasps, abounded.
I’m not a believer per se – but it was unworldly……
