GLASGOW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY: 2018 Wish

GLASGOW CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL CHARITY: 2018 Wish

Towards the end of 2017, Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity invited fundraisers to contribute ‘hopes’ for 2018.

I took some time to think on this; it was instinctively something to which I wanted to contribute, but initial thoughts were either too glib or too untenable. I’ve learnt that the unforeseen and ‘worst of all’ scenarios can prevail, despite ones best efforts and in spite of reason, justice, order, respect, faith…and hope. The hope then is that if and when these most awful things occur, the strength, the will, the fortitude and the faith can be found, to survive.

CHILD BEREAVEMENT UK: Information leaflet Contribution.

In November 2017 I was asked by the Director of Bereavement Services for CBUK, Ann Rowland, if I might contribute to a CBUK information leaflet regarding ‘supporting physical well-being’.
The following is the text as submitted:

I could never have predicted the impact physically of grief – exhaustion in particular . By walking, conversely, I’ve countered that exhaustion: I’ve gained considerable physical strength. In two years I’ve walked over 1200 miles in preparation for challenge treks – doubtless I’ve produced invaluable endorphins. My mood is clearly enhanced, and it definitely feels good to do good: the walking has raised funds for charity.

These are measurable benefits – re the immeasurable: walking has anchored me, it has provoked discipline and provided focus. Most significantly, it has facilitated talking – with friends as well as with myself – which has helped tremendously, to reflect.
