Plate G7.no16: Eilean Donan Castle – near Dornie (Scotland)

Technically, Eilean Donan Castle is not a ruin. Not any more…but it was once. It was built in the 13th Century – but was blown up as consequence of the (failed) Jacobite rebellion.
Its (obviously) been re-built, restored and lovingly so. I cannot testify to its state now, as being true and accurate record of what it once was – but that’s fine with me. I’ve never been a fan of the approach: that buildings once ruined should be re-built as they were. Time moves on……let the building develop, and not become memento would always be my preference.
Interestingly, the feature which establishes the uniqueness of this castle is the bridge linking it to the mainland – but this is a (much) later addition.
Point made – ‘there can be only one’ …exactly…
