Plate G5.no7: Tree Avenue – Kings Garden (Copenhagen)

Whenever I see trees cut so, I think of Bob Ferguson. Bob was the Course Director at the Department of Architecture (University of Strathclyde) when I began teaching. He got me the job, actually – for which I’m grateful, but more so for what I learnt from him, about teaching, and particularly about caring for those in your charge, the students. He said something to me which stays with me yet: “Remember Michael, they are people first……”
Bob had a particular interest in landscape architecture. He once gave a lecture about Paris, about the horizontal pruning of the tree canopy, so familiar to that city, as indicator of a society and a time, more in tune with spatial awareness – for the pruning was a conscious investment to allow space to flow.
