Plate G4.no18: Mitchell Lane III (Glasgow)
This is the third of three pictures of Mitchell Lane. The building protruding but slightly on the left is the Glasgow Herald Building by Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
It was his first major commission: a warehouse; the protrusion housed a water tank. Such mundane matters – and yet, Mackintosh transformed the opportunity into something remarkable: as with all his buildings, no two the same, everyone unique, and of a character never tarnished by ‘icy perfection’.
One can marvel at the construction – to achieve such subtle lines, at such height and in stone beggars belief; but one has to marvel more so at the mind of this man, who could conceive of such things in the first place.
Glaswegians are exceedingly lucky, as am I, to reside alongside Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
