Plate G4.no10: Elmbank Gardens near Charing Cross (Glasgow)

Gardens – well, hardly, and not anymore. But at one time, yes – there were gardens here, part of what was Elmbank Crescent. However, the crescent and gardens both were destroyed, as part of the Bruce plan, to make way for the M8 motorway. A lamentable decision……
Nevertheless, I appreciate the resonance, for the route though hardly inviting, is a route I have oft taken – as it leads to the Baby Grand pub (sadly now, also irrevocably altered, and its singular charm, lost.) Though I have no memory of Elmbank Crescent, I do have memories of many pleasant hours spent comfortably in the (original) Baby Grand, not least as a late-night oasis for a quiet, appreciative night-cap beer. Always worth the risk of venturing through the uninviting concrete garden……
