Plate G4.no5: Caryatids at Merchant House (West George Street Glasgow)

I have a bit of a thing for caryatids, the perfect marriage of sculpture and structure.
I would that I knew more about these specific sculptures – the building is the Merchant House, designed by John Burnet, 1874. He apparently worked with certain specific sculptors, John Mossman being one (who also sculpted the James Watt statue which features in plate no.7 of the ‘GLASGOW’ gallery). If John Mossman did create these caryatids, he captured so perfectly that quality which is so often the case with caryatids: that they carry their load with sublime indifference, as if blessed to bear. There is a life lesson there I think……
